Our partnership

The University of Waikato and Cardiff University signed an agreement to establish a strategic partnership in October 2019. This agreement initiated our commitment to develop a mutually beneficial relationship to promote innovative collaboration and co-operation in the pursuit of academic and professional excellence.

Following the visit of a delegation from Cardiff University in February 2020 to the University of Waikato's Hamilton campus, collaboration between staff at both institutions has increased and, despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, we have shared a number of early successes.

Our shared vision is a sustained partnership, across multiple disciplines and themes, that increases our research performance and impact as well as enriching the staff and student experience at both institutions. We formally launched our strategic partnership in November 2021.

Seed funding for collaboration and mobility

This seed fund supports staff at Cardiff University and the University of Waikato to develop collaborative research, teaching and/or professional services projects that have clear outcomes and a pathway to develop and sustain the collaboration.

Rolling fund / Small grants

Our collaboration seed fund is allocated over two calls annually, one in the Spring and one in the Autumn. However, we understand that on occasion, ad-hoc, short notice, specific, unique funding requests may also arise.

As such, and only if budget allows, we will consider rolling requests for funding up to the value of 2000 NZD / 1000 GBP.

Launch event

We formally launched our partnership with a blended event on the 10th of November 2021. If you missed it, you can watch it on You Tube (it starts at 16:20).

The launch event aimed to raise awareness of the partnership with staff and students, acknowledge success to date, and build further connections across our institutions. The guest speakers included:
