Gradebook

Most papers require marks to be entered in Moodle against each assessment item, including exams. This allows marks to be correctly transferred to MyWaikato, where students will view their final grades.

Note:

• Use IC (incomplete) for unattempted, compulsory assessments only.
• If your Gradebook isn't adding up correctly, check the maximum mark for each assessment, which is set to 100 by default.

How do I know if my gradebook is set up correctly?

Check that the following is true:

• There is a gradebook item for every assessment.
• You have at least one gradebook category.
• All gradebook items are inside a category.
• The weightings and calculations for items, categories, and the paper total are correct.
• The category weights add to 100.

Example gradebook

In the example gradebook below:

• Essays is a category, worth 30% of the paper total. It includes 2 Assessment items, each worth 15.
• Quizzes is a category, worth 15% of the paper total. It includes 4 quizzes, but students only have to do 3, or only their 3 best results are counted.
• Forum discussions is a category, worth 5% of the paper total. It includes one assessment item called Forum discussions rating.
• Final exam is a category, worth 50% of the paper total. It includes one assessment item called Final exam.
• Assessment for feedback is a category, worth 0%. It appears by default. You can delete it, or use it to hold formative assessments, or delete it and create your own formative assessment categories.

Note:

If you are setting up your assessments and gradebook from scratch, we recommend using the paper setup wizards.

If you are customising a gradebook, you can make changes directly in the gradebook. Go to your Moodle paper, select Grades, then the Setup tab.
