Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and Learning - PGCert(TertiaryT&L)

The Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching and Learning is a recognised qualification for those working in tertiary education contexts who wish to extend their understanding of tertiary learning and teaching, improve their own practice and facilitate positive change in student learning across their courses and programmes or in their specific areas of work.

It is a flexible programme that can benefit people engaged in tertiary education teaching at any point during their career. The programme can be completed over 1 - 4 years, depending on individual preferences and needs.  You can enrol in single papers, or combine four papers for the full qualification.

Through the PGCert(TertiaryT&L) programme, participants will have opportunities to improve their own teaching, research teaching and learning, critically engage with theories and principles of tertiary teaching and learning, contextualise their own practice locally, nationally and globally, and be prepared to take responsibility for leading teaching and learning initiatives at an appropriate level.

The PGCert(TertiaryT&L) requires successful completion of four elective papers. It can be taken in blended form or completely online.

All blended papers will be offered in Hamilton and Tauranga subject to sufficient student numbers.

We are also able to offer papers in custom-designed block delivery format subject to minimum group numbers. For further details, see here.

• a Bachelor's degree
• current engagement in teaching or facilitation of learning in a tertiary environment

TERTL507 Facilitating Learning in Small Group Contexts (NET)

This paper enables participants to apply  theories and strategies related to effective facilitation of small group learning to their own practice.

TERTL511 English-Medium Instruction (EMI) in Higher Education Teaching (NET)

This paper examines principles and practices of English-medium instruction (EMI), focussing particularly on settings where students (and/or lecturers)  are using English as a second or foreign language.

TERTL515 Pacific Pedagogies for Tertiary Teachers and Learners (HAM/FLEXI)

This paper allows the participant to better identify pathways of success for Pacific learners, through an introduction to Pacific pedagogies, which can be utilised to assist them design better learning experiences for their students.

TERTL501 Integrating Kaupapa Maori Across Programmes (HAM/FLEXI)

The paper is useful for anyone who wishes to explore concepts of kaupapa Maori and how these concepts may inform the practices of tertiary teaching and learning. The paper provides an introduction to Te Ao Maori (the Maori world) and te reo Maori (Maori language) with a focus on the integration of these elements into the teaching programme regardless of the subject area that is being taught. It is suitable for those with little or no knowledge of te reo Maori or kaupapa Maori.

TERTL502 Work-integrated Learning (NET)

Drawing on cooperative education theories, this paper explores diverse models for work-integrated learning (WIL), introduces participants to the key features of WIL, and examines options for implementing WIL in a paper or programme.  Participants can design learning activities relevant to WIL, as well as evaluate and assess learning, skills, and competencies associated with WIL in a variety of teaching contexts.

TERTL506 Curriculum and Course Design (NET)

This paper enables participants to think deeply about curriculum design at both programme and course levels, informed by contemporary educational theories and models of instructional design.  The paper provides opportunities for participants to confidently design, develop, and implement a course relevant to their field.

TERTL500 Learning, Teaching and Assessment in Tertiary Education (NET/flexi dates)

This paper enables participants to explore core concepts of teaching, learning and assessment and develop the knowledge and skills for effective teaching in tertiary teaching contexts.

TERTL504 Supervising Postgraduate Students (NET/flexi dates)

This paper aims to introduce participants to current research and practical perspectives of the epistemology of postgraduate student supervision. Discussion topics may include models of supervision, different models of the thesis, specific issues in the supervision of international students, transferable skills beyond the postgraduate degree, and postgraduate qualifications within an international context.

TERTL513 Researching Tertiary Learning and Teaching Practice (NET/flexi dates)

In this paper, participants design, implement and evaluate a small-scale research project on an aspect of teaching and learning in their own tertiary education context.

TERTL590 Directed Study (NET/flexi dates)

This paper offers participants the opportunity to examine a specific area of tertiary learning and teaching, with learning outcomes and content agreed by the participant and paper convenor.
