An understanding of the properties, limitations, and selection of materials used in construction is fundamental for a practising civil engineer. This paper covers in more detail the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of common building materials such as timber, steel, ceramics, polymers, and composites. The paper also covers timber design and introduces construction process methodologies, project planning, documentation, health & safety and temporary works.
