This paper is conducted in the workplace with supervision from University staff and a workplace supervisor or mentor. The aims of the paper are to broaden the student’s practical planning experience, so that they develop confidence and sound judgement as autonomous planning professionals. The paper involves regular reflection on, and reporting of, workplace experience in the light of planning principles and theory. Students who complete this paper will be expected to take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of their professional work; exercise independent professional judgement; be able to give valid, sound, and expert advice on planning matters to councils at a council hearing, or to the Environment Court; demonstrate a practical understanding of the role of ‘expert witness’ in front of the Environment Court or a council hearing.
