Strategic Management Subject regulations
Strategic Management takes a big picture view of an organisation to envision its future potential, find new market opportunities, and develop a clear plan to achieve growth and success. Through real-world case studies and theory, you'll develop the skills to identify major threats and new opportunities facing a company, solve problems, and find ways to add value to the bottom line.
Strategic Management is available as a first major for the Bachelor of Business (BBus), Bachelor of Climate Change (BCC), and Bachelor of Management Studies with Honours (BMS(Hons))[1]. Strategic Management may also be included as a second major or minor in other undergraduate degrees, subject to approval of the Division in which the student is enrolled.
To complete Strategic Management as a single major for the BBus or BCC, students must gain 135 points from papers listed for Strategic Management, including 105 points above 100 level, and 60 points above 200 level. Students must complete STMGT101, LEADR101, STMGT201, STMGT202, STMGT203, STMGT301, MNGMT321, 15 points from STMGT302, STMGT304, STMGT305 or STMGT306, and one of WSOMM396 or WSOMM399.
To complete Strategic Management as part of a double major for the BBus, BCC or other undergraduate degree, students must gain 120 points from papers listed for Strategic Management, including 90 points above 100 level, and 45 points above 200 level. Students must complete STMGT101, LEADR101, STMGT201, STMGT202, STMGT203, STMGT301, MNGMT321, and 15 points from STMGT302, STMGT304, STMGT305 or STMGT306.
To complete a minor in Strategic Management, students must complete 60 points from the papers listed for the Strategic Management major, including at least 30 points above 100 level. Students must complete STMGT101.

[1] There will be no new enrolments into the BMS(Hons) from 2024. Students who commenced a BMS(Hons) in 2023 or prior should contact the Waikato Management School for programme advice.

GradCert(StratMgt) and GradDip(StratMgt) A Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma are available to graduates who have not included Strategic Management at an advanced level in their first degree. The qualification regulations define the subject requirements for the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma. There are no specified subject papers that must be completed for these programmes.

PGCert(StratMgt), PGDip(StratMgt), BBus(Hons) and MBus The qualification regulations define the subject requirements for the BBus(Hons), PGCert(StratMngt), PGDip(StratMngt), and MBus. There are no specified subject papers that must be completed for the BBus(Hons), PGCert(StratMngt), PGDip(StratMngt) programmes.
MBus students must complete MNGMT581, and one of STMGT591, STMGT592, STMGT593, or STMGT594. Students taking the 120 point MBus are required to complete at least 60 points from the papers listed for the subject. Students taking the 180 point MBus are required to complete at least 120 points from the papers listed for the subject.

MPhil The Master of Philosophy is a one year research-based degree in which students undertake a programme of approved and supervised research that leads to a thesis which critically investigates an approved topic of substance and significance, demonstrates expertise in the methods of research and scholarship, displays intellectual independence and makes a substantial original contribution to the subject area concerned, and is of publishable quality.
