Promoting health of our diverse student population
Support and workshops to help with wellbeing and healthcare for Māori, Pasific, Takatāpui, LGBTQIA+ and gender diverse students.
Accessing support and healthcare remains difficult for Māori, Takatāpui and LGBTQIA+ students and Pasifka students. Our Health Promotions Coordinator, Dr Tāwhanga Nopera (Te Arawa, Tūwharetoa,Tainui, Ngāpuhi), has expertise Māori, Indigenous, Tākatāpui and LGBTQIA+ health.
Through direct engagement with student support groups on campus, and staff networks, Tāwhanga advises on kaupapa Māori strategies toward oranga and wellness. Tāwhanga provides one on one or group support and wānanga for students who may be feeling isolated and unsure about ways forward, and also for staff who have concerns about students they are supporting.
Tāwhanga can be contacted by emailing Dr Tāwhanga Nopera or by calling the Student Health reception.
Research undertaken by Dr Tāwhanga Nopera provide the most up to date data on wellness and access barriers to healthcare for Tākatāpui and LGBTQIA+ living in Aotearoa.
