Our Bachelor of Environmental Planning (BEP) is a multidisciplinary, research-led programme that prepares you for a career in planning and environmental management.

As a BEP student, you'll be taught by leading academics and industry experts who are at the forefront of the latest research and innovation in climate change adaptation, sustainable housing, water management, Māori resource management and biodiversity conservation.

With close connections to the wider Waikato region and its wealth of natural resources, our environmental planning programme provides a core foundation and a choice of specialised streams to shape your future career.

 

This four-year degree is divided into three streams:

  • Science and the Environment
  • Society and the Environment
  • Te Ara Taiao: Māori and the Environment

The degree brings together papers from subjects including Environmental Planning, Biology, Economics, Māori and Indigenous Studies, Public Policy, Political Science and Geography.

Our Bachelor of Environmental Planning is accredited by the New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI).

The BEP provides you with practical, industry experience gained across labs, workshops and field trips. You'll also benefit from guest lecturers and practical activities, and will attend industry-focused events such as resource management hearings, urban design evaluations and environmental impact assessment workshops.

Practical experience

Many of the papers offered within the BEP contain opportunities for practical experience including labs, workshops and field trips. You'll also benefit from guest lecturers and practical activities, and will attend industry-focused events such as resource management hearings, urban design evaluations and environmental impact assessment workshops

As you progress in your programme of study you are expected to undertake a wide range of practical activities as part of your assessment. Preparation of maps, GIS applications, resource consent applications, resource management plans, iwi management plans, policy position papers and environmental monitoring plans are examples of the intended practical experience component.
